The Heart Chakra Field Guide

Offering a deeper understanding of the Heart Chakra, the Heart and Pericardium Meridians, the Fire and Water elements, and simple practices you can return to.

What Is the Heart Chakra?

The heart chakra, known in Sanskrit as Anahata, meaning unstruck or unbeaten, is the fourth of the seven main energy centres in the body. It sits at the centre of the chest and governs our capacity for love, compassion, connection, grief, forgiveness, and joy. It is also the bridge between worlds: the three lower chakras below it are concerned with our physical existence, our sense of safety, our relationships, and our personal power, while the three above it move into expression, intuition, and spiritual connection. The heart sits at the crossing point of all of this, which is why when it is closed or carrying too much, we feel it everywhere.

The heart chakra is associated with the colour green, and in some traditions also with pink. Its element is air. It governs not only our emotional life but also, on a physical level, the heart and lungs, the circulatory and respiratory systems, the shoulders, arms, and hands.

The Heart Meridian and the Pericardium Meridian

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, energy moves through the body along pathways called meridians, and two of these flow directly through the heart system.

The heart meridian runs from the heart itself down through the armpit and along the inside of the arm to the little finger. It governs our emotional stability, our capacity for joy, and our ability to connect authentically with others. When it is balanced, we feel present, warm, and open. When it is depleted or congested, we may experience anxiety, emotional volatility, insomnia, or a sense of being closed off from the people around us.

The pericardium meridian, sometimes called the heart protector, runs a similar course but carries a distinct function. The pericardium is the protective sac that surrounds the physical heart, and its meridian operates in the same way energetically: it acts as a guardian, regulating what we allow in and what we keep out. When this meridian is healthy, we are discerning without being defended. When it is overworked, we may find ourselves either unable to let people in at all, or alternatively, so open that we absorb everything around us and lose our own centre.

Working with both meridians together, as we will in this call, addresses the heart from two complementary angles: the capacity to feel, and the wisdom to protect.

Fire and Water: The Elements of the Heart

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the heart is governed by the Fire element. Fire brings warmth, aliveness, enthusiasm, laughter, and the capacity for genuine intimacy. It is the spark of connection, the quality that makes us feel lit up by life.

Water, governed by the kidneys and bladder, has a cooling and contracting quality. In balance, water supports the fire beautifully, keeping it steady rather than consuming. But when water emotions, such as fear, anxiety, dread, and deep-seated worry, accumulate in excess, they can begin to dampen the fire of the heart, leaving us feeling flat, emotionally muted, or cut off from our own joy.

This is why clearing water emotions is such powerful preparation for heart healing. When the dampening influence is lifted, the fire has room to rise again naturally.

Signs Your Heart Chakra May Be Out of Balance

You may notice one or several of these, and none of them is a cause for alarm. They are simply information.

Emotionally, you might feel a persistent low-grade grief that has no clear source, difficulty trusting others, a tendency to people-please or over-give, jealousy, bitterness, resentment that will not seem to shift, or a sense of being emotionally numb or disconnected from what you once loved.

Physically, you might notice tightness or heaviness in the chest, shallow breathing, tension across the shoulders and upper back, or a tendency toward respiratory issues.

Relationally, you might find yourself either withdrawing from intimacy or giving so much of yourself that there is nothing left. Both are expressions of imbalance, simply in opposite directions.

Energetically, you might feel as though you are going through the motions of your life without really inhabiting it, or that something you cannot name is sitting between you and a genuine sense of wellbeing.

Signs Your Heart Chakra Is Open and Thriving

You feel genuinely warm toward people, including strangers. Compassion arises naturally rather than as an effort. You are able to receive love and care without deflecting it. Forgiveness feels like a relief rather than a defeat. You experience real moments of joy and are able to let them land. You feel connected to something larger than yourself. Your relationships feel nourishing rather than draining, and you are able to give from a place of genuine fullness.

Tending Your Heart

These are simple practices you can return to any time:

BREATHE INTO THE CHEST
Place one hand on your heart and take five slow, deep breaths directed into the space beneath your palm. As you exhale, consciously release any tightness you find there. This takes less than two minutes and shifts the nervous system immediately.

WORK WITH GREEN AND PINK
Spend a few moments each morning visualising a warm green or soft pink light filling your chest. You do not need to do anything with it. Simply let it be there.

SOUND
The seed sound associated with the heart chakra is YAM. Chanting or simply humming it gently creates a vibration that resonates directly with this energy centre.

JOUNALLING
Ask yourself one question each day from the Heart Inventory included in this mailout. You do not need to answer at length. Even a sentence or two opens something.

FORGIVENESS AS A DAILY PRACTICE
At the end of each day, ask yourself: is there anyone, including myself, I am holding something against today? You are not required to release it immediately. Simply naming it honestly is the beginning.

Bring this guide to the call if you wish. We will be moving through many of these concepts together, and having them in front of you may deepen the experience.
