What Is Holding You Back?

What Is Holding You Back?
Fear rarely announces itself by name. It tends to arrive dressed as something else entirely: as practicality, as timing, as not being ready yet, as protecting someone you love. This guide is an invitation to look a little more closely at what has been keeping you where you are.
How to Use This Guide
This is not a test and there are no right answers. The prompts are designed to open things up, not close them down. You do not need to complete every section before the call. Move through what feels alive for you and leave what does not. Find a quiet moment when you will not be interrupted. Have something to write with,
or type directly into this document. If something brings up a strong feeling, stay with it rather than moving quickly past it. That feeling is information.
Part One: Understanding Fear
Before we look at your specific fears, it helps to understand what fear actually is and how it operates. Most of us were taught to see fear as a sign that something is wrong or dangerous. In a spiritual context, we can understand it differently.
What fear actually is
Fear is energy. At its most basic level it is your nervous system registering something unfamiliar, uncertain or threatening to the identity you have built. It is not always telling you that something is genuinely dangerous. More often it is signalling that you are near the edge of what feels known and safe.
Fear has a function. It was designed to protect you. The question to sit with is not how to get rid of fear but what your fear has been protecting you from, and whether that protection is still serving you.
The faces fear wears
Fear rarely presents as pure fear. In our lives and in spiritual growth it tends to show up disguised as one or more of these:
Common disguises of fear
|
See if any of these feel familiar. Notice if reading the list brings any recognition in your body.
Part Two: Naming What is Present
This section is about getting honest with yourself about where the stuckness is living right now. You might find one thing comes up clearly, or you might find several. Trust whatever surfaces.
1.Is there something in your life right now that you keep not quite doing, not quite starting, or not quite finishing? Write it down as specifically as you can. |
2.When you imagine taking the next step toward it, what is the first feeling or sensation that arrives in your body? Where do you feel it? Try to describe it in physical terms. |
3.What does the fear or resistance tell you when you really listen to it? What is the story it is running? |
4.How long have you been holding this particular thing in place? When did it start, as best as you can tell? |
Part Three: Looking Underneath
Fear almost always has a belief beneath it. Something we decided was true about ourselves, about the world, or about what is possible for us, often a long time ago. These questions are designed to help you find what is underneath the surface story.
Common core beliefs underneath fear
|
5.If you knew with complete certainty that this was going to work out, would you still be afraid? If yes, what is the fear actually about underneath the outcome? |
6.Is this fear familiar? Does it show up in other areas of your life? Where have you felt it before? |
7.What would you have to believe about yourself or the world for this resistance to make complete sense? |
8.Whose voice does this fear sound like? Is it yours, or does it belong to someone else? |
Part Four: What the Fear is Protecting
Fear is not always the enemy. Sometimes it is holding something on our behalf. There is often a very good reason why part of us decided to stay still, and understanding that reason with compassion is one of the most powerful moves we can make.
What staying stuck can protect
|
9.What does staying where you are allow you to keep? What might you lose or have to face if you moved forward? |
10.Is there a part of you that feels safer not changing? If you could speak to that part with kindness, what do you think it most needs to hear? |
11.Who in your life might be affected if you moved through this fear? Is there anyone you are unconsciously protecting by staying stuck? |
Part Five: Working With the Energy
Fear is not just a thought. It lives in the body and it moves through the body. These questions and the short practice below are designed to help you begin working with the energy of your fear rather than simply analysing it.
Place one hand on your chest and take three slow breaths. On each exhale, let your shoulders drop a little further. Notice what is present in your body right now without trying to change it. Give it thirty seconds, then continue. |
12.After the short practice above, what did you notice? Did anything shift, soften or become a little clearer? |
13.What would transmuting this fear feel like in your body? Not resolving it intellectually but actually releasing its hold. Try to describe it as a physical sensation or an image. |
14.If this fear were an object, a colour, a texture or a shape, what would it be? Let the first thing that comes come, without editing it. |
15.Is there anything this fear has taught you, even if the lesson was hard? Is there anything you would want to keep from it even as you release its grip? |
Part Six: Bringing it to the Call
You do not need to have resolved anything before our time together. The call is a space to move energy, not just understand it. These last questions are about clarifying what you want to bring into the room.
16.What is the one thing you most want to clarify, shift or release in this area of your life? |
17.Is there anything you have avoided writing down or looking at in this guide? What is it, even if you can only gesture toward it? |
18.What would your life look like if this fear no longer had the same hold on you? Describe it in as much sensory detail as you can. |
19.What is one small thing you could do before the call that would be a gentle act of movement toward what you want? It does not have to be significant. It just has to be real. |
Bring whatever feels alive for you to the call. You do not have to share everything you have written. Trust that whatever surfaces is exactly what needs to be there. We will take it from there together. |
Keep your answers somewhere safe when you are done.
You may find it meaningful to return to them after the call and notice what has shifted.
